A top 10 at the US Open always feels good

I felt good this week. Not just after it was over, but actually playing golf felt good. I felt comfortable over the ball. That’s important. I have gone through times in my career where I felt very comfortable. There have been other times where I haven’t felt comfortable at all, whether it be an injury, or a mental thing that hindered me. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve felt pretty good actually. It doesn’t show in my scores, but I’ve been trying new things and getting my feel back. Sometimes you get worse before you get better. I had coaches tell me that all the time growing up whenever I played golf, baseball or basketball. They told me that when change happens, and it is for the best, you will inevitably get worse before it gets better and not to worry about the bad times because when the good comes, it’s really good. And I feel like I am on the precipice of that good, if not over the edge already.

A top 10 at the US Open always feels good. I was happy with what I did and how I played.  Of course I would have liked to have gone a little lower and won the thing, but I had many victories this week. Congratulations to Lucas Glover, by the way. A good, hard fought win on a tough golf course.

I arrived in New York on Monday and right away a flood of memories came crashing into my mind. Good memories. Bethpage Black was the site of my first Major, my first US Open, my first professional event. I didn’t make the cut, but I got a taste of what was to come. That was back in 2002. 7 years ago. It feels just like yesterday, but a lot has happened since that first tournament. It felt good to come back to the site of my first Open and card a top 10.

I got two questions all week – what’s it like playing in these weather conditions, and who is this Ricky Barnes?

Well, Ricky is a solid golfer and is always capable of low scores. Even though he is not yet a household name, he is a former US Amateur champion that has the skills to put up some amazing scores. I wasn’t surprised at all with how well he shot this weekend.

As for the weather, we all had to play through it. It’s definitely not an ideal situation, but what are you going to do? You play through it. I was real happy with how I played during round 1. I shot an Even par 70 through difficult conditions. I was second out of the golfers in my wave. The second wave came through and there were a lot of low scores out there, but that’s the luck of the draw. There’s nothing you can do about it. You just have to go out there, play with the conditions you are given, and play your best. Complaining will get you nowhere out here. The only place it will get you is cut. Every week. We were all able to play through the conditions and we had a great week of golf.

Round 2 was a solid one for me. I shot a 1 under 69. 2 birdies and 1 bogey. That’s a great US Open scorecard. You want to be as steady as you can be out there. It’s about being solid during the Open. You don’t want a lot of up and down scores. The first round I was able to bounce back a lot. That helps too. It seems during the first round, whenever I got a bogey, a birdie was up next. That’s a great feeling, knowing that when a bogey comes, you just feel there’s a birdie coming next.

Round 3 was a 2 over 72. I felt good about where I was and I felt that even though I was 1 over and 8 strokes back  when I went to bed on Sunday night, I had a chance. I had 12 holes left at that point and I thought if I went 5 under during those holes, I would have an outside chance at a victory or a playoff. I ended up 1 over during those 12 holes, but I never lost confidence in my game. I never felt uncomfortable standing over a shot. It was a big step forward for me, this week. I really know that I have figured some things out with my game and I am now comfortable and confident. I’m ready to play some great golf. I’m ready to shoot some low scores. I’m ready to get a win.

I thoroughly enjoyed being back at Bethpage Black. I played well, The rain fell, but I didn’t mind. I knew that the rain’s not falling on my game. I’ve gotten to a clearing. Hopefully the skies will clear up dramatically for me the next few weeks. I’m looking forward to more golf in the near future.

Thank you to everyone that supported me this week and every other week for that matter. It’s great to know that there are people out there that care.

From the leaderboard, I’ll see you next time.

    Shell Houston Open

I had a great week at the Shell Houston Open. The first three rounds were going as planned. I put myself in a position to win the golf tournament. I just couldn’t pull it out through those last 18 holes.

When a tournament has delays and you have to play 30 holes in a day or 24 holes in a day, it throws some people off. Most of us out here on tour are professional enough to stay focused and play through it. Playing amateur golf, you have a lot of days you play 36 holes in a day, so I am used to it. I had a question that someone sent to me at my Jobvana page about staying focused. They told me that they try to go golfing to relax, but work gets in the way.  They can’t help thinking about other things. Well, for me it is a bit different since golf is my job. So, what I do is try to stay loose in between shots. I will talk with my caddy or my playing partners about anything: What we did last night, what movies we’ve seen lately, other sporting events, just anything but golf, but once I am over the ball everything is focused on the shot. I focus on what I have to do.  I am just trying to focus on staying positive out there and having the last thought before each shot be a positive one. It hasn’t worked on every shot, but I am making strides in that direction and I think that is a good thing to try: stay positive, try and talk about anything other than work and focus on each shot.

I am feeling great with my putter. That really helps when you are trying to win a tournament. It’s good to have my ball striking on as well. It was really nice to be right up on top of the leaderboard after 54 holes, now all I need to do is do that after 72 holes. I am getting closer every tournament I play in this year. It’s nice to see my game progressing in a positive direction. I am feeling really good about my game. It’s been a year of adjustment so far. I am trying new things and seeing what are the best things for me.

Well, a tie for 11th is pretty good. Let’s see if I can go out and do better next time. I’m disappointed that I am not playing this week, but I’ll be out there the week after, so look for me. My game is in a good place right now and I am feeling good.

From the leaderboard, I’ll see you next time…

    Transitions Championship

Sorry I didn't get this up sooner, but I still want to share some thoughts about the last tournmaent. The Transitions Championship was a pretty good week for me, if I am being honest. I felt better than I have in weeks. It’s funny how different things can be from one week to the next. The week before in Puerto Rico, I was 1st in Green in Regulation and my putting wasn’t spectacular, to say the least. If I could have gotten the putter going last week, my tie for 44th would have turned into a top 10 at least. This week was a different story. I was tied for 59th in Greens in Regulation, but I was 4th in Putting and 6th in Putts per Green in Regulation. The putting turned around for me and that felt good. To play well on Tour, you need to putt well, not just put the ball on the green. A top 20 finish feels much better than a 44th place finish.

It’s baffling to a lot of us on Tour why one week you can be on fire and then struggle the next. It can even happen mid-round. I remember a round that I had in college that was a 1o stroke swing from the front 9 to the back 9.  Consistency is key out here and that is just the thing I am trying to achieve. As an amateur, I had an incredible consistency. As a Pro, it hasn’t gotten to that point yet, but this year feels different than the rest of them. I feel like I am ready. I feel like I am healthy. I feel like practicing. I feel like getting up in the morning and going golfing. I have felt those things previously, but now it is to an extent that all of them are happening at once.

I did not play at Bay Hill last week. I would like to. Arnold Palmer is someone that I grew up admiring and being able to meet him and talk to him is still one of the big thrills of my life. It’s a great tournament and one of my goals is that there is no question year in and year out if I will be invited to play or not.

I am back this week at the Shell Houston Open. My brother Jeremy is caddying for me, so it should be a good week! I am excited to get back out and play after a few extra days of practice and relaxing at home!

Have a great week and from the leaderboard, I’ll see you next time.

    Puerto Rico Open

It was a good week at the puerto rico open. Puerto Rico has some beautiful spots and I was able to visit some breathtaking vistas. It’s a great place to be, golf or no, but it was a plus to be able to play four days in a tournament and I played decent too.

The ball striking was solid this week. If you look at the stats, I was tied for 1st in the field in greens in regulation. I felt really good hitting the ball this week, but being number one in GIR and a 44th place finish should not be one and the same. That can only mean one thing: something else wasn’t great. And this week, that something else was my putting. It wasn’t bad, mind you, but it wasn’t the putting that I’m used to. I know it’s coming and soon all facets of my game will be coming together and when that happens, something better than a tie for 44th will be waiting for me.

I had a good time with my brother Jason on the bag this week. We work well together. He is a good caddy and besides being a good brother, he is a good friend. We are starting to find a groove here as player/caddy and that is important to me. When I am comfortable with my caddy, I am more comfortable with my game.

This was a great week for Michael Scott and the gang on “The Office”. Once Michael came in dressed as Willy Wonka, I knew we were in for a treat. I am really excited about this week in which Idris Elba – the actor who played Stringer Bell in “The Wire” – is coming to play Michael’s boss for 6 episodes. It should be a good 6 weeks!

Other than golf and spending 22 minutes on “The Office”, I was able to swim a bit, sightsee a bit, and have some good food. They have some great stuff in Puerto Rico.

Well, I am off to Tampa Bay to play this week in the transitions championship at Innisbrook where I will do my best to double the amount of playing days compared to last year’s tournament!

From the leaderboard, I will see you next week…

    Northern Trust Open

I just finshed playing another tournament. This time I was in L.A. at the northern trust open. I like the course and I played well in spots, but it just seemed like I wasn’t able to string a few birdies together when I needed them. It’s a frustrating feeling that I know will subside once things start flowing. I am taking next week off, so the break from a tournament and the practice time will get me back on the right track.

I don’t want to alienate anybody from L.A., but I understand Ben Gibbard when he sang “Why You’d Want to Live Here.” In that song he doesn’t quite speak fondly of L.A. I am not sure why anybody would want to live in L.A. At least I was able to figure that out this week. That’s one positive: I’m not moving to L.A.

Right now, my successful rounds are successful putting rounds. To really be effective this year, I need to put together not just quality putting stats, but I need to hit more greens and fairways. My ball striking is really close and I know it is just a matter of time until it flows. There are definitely times when I feel like nothing can go wrong. Those are the times in an athletes career that make them. I’ve felt that a few times, but not often enough. I know I am close, and I am going to use this week to focus a bit on what I need to do to get better.

It’s a good feeling to be healthy and to be able to focus on the game. I have really felt this last off-season and the beginning of this year that I play the best when I play for the love of the game. So, all I am trying to do is play golf and enjoy it. Every week I go out there, I want to focus on playing and playing only. I don’t want to think about where the money is coming from or who is watching me or what this person thinks or that person; I want to play golf, plain and simple.

I’m going to enjoy this week off. I hope you have a good week as well.

From the leaderboard, I will see you next time.

    Valentines Day at Pebble Beach

the at&t pebble beach national pro-am has gone to a Monday finish due to weather and I’m not joining them. I finished my week after Saturday due to a 5 over round that didn’t see too much inconsistency besides the two double bogeys that I suffered as bookends to my round. I’m a bit frustrated by missing cuts, but I know that I am close. I have had three bad rounds this year as opposed to ten good to decent rounds and that only translates to one paycheck made. It’s tough out there and you have to go out ready on every shot; ready standing over every putt.

After a week like this, I am able to take away some good aspects and some bad. I am always trying to improve on the bad, so I am going to go practice and get better. That is all you can do. You practice, improve your game and then the confidence starts coming and that’s when things start getting good.

Next week. I am playing at the northern trust open at Riviera. I am expecting to have a good week. I always do in the beginning. We’ll shoot for every round to be like my second round here at Pebble Beach.

I hope you had a good Valentine’s Day. Mine was better after I finished my round. Maybe you stayed in and made beef stew using cheddar cheese instead of water? Maybe you went out and had a Mcflurry? Whatever you did, I hope it was a good one.

From the leaderboard, I’ll see you next week.

    North Course at Torrey Pines

People keep telling me that the North Course at Torrey Pines is a lot easier than the South Course. That certainly didn’t prove out for me at The buick invitational this week.

The North Course didn’t do me a favor as I shot a 79 on Thursday. It’s funny; the difference between a 69 and 79 is not that much. My driver and my putter were off just a bit on Thursday and that proved the difference.

After that performance on Thursday, I knew I had to go shoot low just to make the cut on Friday at the more difficult South Course. My game felt better, but a 4 under 68 was just outside the cut line and I didn’t get to play on the weekend.

I think the biggest difference between my performance this week and last week at the fbr was putting. It’s so important to get the putter going early. A lot of putting is confidence and that is usually the difference between burning the edges and falling in the cup.

At least I had some good fish tacos while I was down in San Diego. It was great to be there as it is such a beautiful area, but that wasn’t on my mind this weekend, as I needed to go out and practice. The goal is to get better every week. This week is no exception.

This next week, I am playing at the at&t pebble beach national pro-am. If the short pattern of this 2009 season will play out, I should have a high finish this week. I missed the cut in my first week out and had a Top Ten in the week following. This is a week following a missed cut, so it should be a good one.

From the leaderboard, I’ll see you next week…

There are spikes on my shoes, and other tidbits from the FBR

For the record: I do have spikes on the bottom of my shoes. I have received so many questions about my shoes, that I just wanted to put it out there right away. The shoes look good and are comfortable to play in. Since I do not have a clothing deal or club deal as of now, I am able to go out to the course, wear what I want to wear and play the clubs that are the most comfortable to me. I have a mixed bag of clubs and I shop for my own clothes.

It really has been a liberating feeling to be able to go out on the course and focus solely on golf and not have the pressure of this and that.

It was a great week for me. I had my family and friends down in Scottsdale for the fbr open. I played well too. A tie for 6th (and 4 rounds in the 60’s) is a solid finish and I am happy with it. I definitely would rather win every week I am out there, but Top 10s go a long way for the success of a season. I am feeling healthy, so I was able to practice full time in the off-season and get back to the basics of why I am out there and I think that has helped me. My ball striking feels good and I am confident standing over a putt.

It was fun playing in Scottsdale this week. I have a house down there, so it felt good and comfortable. It’s a great area and the fans that come out for the FBR are some of the most fun out there. They really made things fun this week. It’s definitely a different feel than any other week on tour.

I enjoyed my attire this week, even though
gary mccord thought i looked like “a cross between ellen degeneres and justin timberlake.” It was a pretty clever quote. I thought it was pretty funny. The clothes that I am wearing are more my style and I feel comfortable in them – so that’s why I wear them.

I might get a little time to go fishing this week as I make my way to San Diego for the buick invitational at Torrey Pines. I like playing at Torrey, and I am playing well, so I have a good feeling about this week. I just need to go out there and focus on golf and not worry about the things around me and then success will come in terms of my play and my enjoyment of the game.

The plan right now is to play the next three weeks, so check out the tournaments. From the leaderboard, I’ll be back next week.

I'm getting ready for the 2009 PGA Tour season...

It’s been an interesting year for me. I never really got going. Every time I started to play well or feel well, I sputtered a bit. It wasn’t always a fun year out there on tour, but I learned a lot. I really think that this will be a year that I can use as a jumping off point. I am feeling healthy for the first time since I’ve been out on tour. That is a huge thing for me, but now I have to re-train myself. I have been compensating so much for injuries; I need to work hard now to get back to where I was in the past.

Now that I am healthy, I am excited to re-tool. I’m excited to practice. I’m excited to get my game back to the point where I am confident standing over every shot that I take. Being on tour now for a while, I know what it takes to be successful. I’ve seen others around me rise to the challenge and get that elusive first win, which snowballs into a second win. It takes practice and a dedication to the game. I’m ready to dedicate myself fully to whatever it takes to get that success on tour.

I had a couple really good weeks out there this year. That’s really what made it for me. I lost in a playoff in Texas. To be honest, that was really a turning point for me. I played well, but I didn’t feel great that week. I knew what I was capable of and knew that I could win. I thought I would win, but alas, it did not happen. I realized at that point that I needed to focus; I needed to get in better shape mentally and physically. That was the point where everything started to come into focus. That was the point in which I put together a plan to get back to confidence in my game, in my life; to get back to the way I was playing in the past.

It really is an exciting point in my career. It’s in my hands. I control what I need to do daily to get there. I can really see the breakthrough point. I really think it is going to be a great year for me. I have been working all fall to be ready for the beginning of 2009 and will continue to work hard this winter on everything I need to to become the best possible player and person that I can be.

I want to thank all of you that have supported me throughout this year and my career. I want to thank my family for being strong and showing incredible support throughout my life. I couldn’t ask for a better family. I want to thank the fans that support me, that want to see me succeed. It means a lot to me. I want to thank my sponsors: Ping, Oakley, Callaway, Rolex and Jobvana.com for all of the support they have given me. I love being a part of their ‘families’ and I believe in them as companies and individuals.

Thank you again to everybody and I look forward to spending an incredible 2009 with you. This is my last tour blog for the season, but I’ll try to get some new pictures, videos and updates out here soon. As always, send me a message if you have questions or are looking for tips and I’ll try to answer them in the blog – maybe one of these days I can even video some tips and post them up here.

Have a great holiday season - I’ll see you in 2009…

    Children's Miracle Network Classic

There was no miracle this week for me at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Walt Disney World. Well, no miracle as far as my golf game is concerned. It was another week of low scores along with favorable scoring conditions. I just didn’t produce any momentum. Every time I felt like I was getting going, I sputtered. I’m sure you’ve felt like that before. It can be a frustrating feeling.

While shooting a pair of 73’s (at least I was consistent), I saw the opportunity for 65’s. I literally saw them pass me by as quickly as Liz Lemon got out of jury duty. By the way, if you are not watching 30 Rock, you are missing out on the funniest show on TV. This last episode had me laughing from start to finish. Even if you don’t think it is funny, at least you would understand my Liz Lemon reference.

This was the last tournament of the year. The offseason now comes with the holidays and time to spend with family. It’s also a critical time for me and my game. Like I’ve said the past couple months, I am feeling healthy and I am excited for what next year has in store for me. I am going to use this time off to continue to improve and use it as a launching pad to propel me to a successful 2009. I have a good feeling about next year.

The miracle for me this week was not on the course as I have mentioned, but it was at Disney World. I was able to spend time with my nephews. They are amazing boys. You should see them light up. They were so excited to be at Disney World. We had such a good time together. It’s one of the best times I have had all year. They fill me with so much joy when I am with them.

Thanks for all your support. It means a lot to me.

    Just couldn't score at grayhawk...

After a week like this, I have mixed emotions. I didn’t play bad. I actually hit the ball well, my swing felt good, but I just didn’t score. I feel like my game is right on the verge of breaking through, so what do I do after missing the cut? I just keep right on going. I get up in the morning and go practice, just like every other day.

Even though I missed the cut, I had a good time in Scottsdale playing Grayhawk. I like the course and the set up was fair. I had fun with my playing partners this week. They kept it loose, which always makes the round more enjoyable.

I’m fortunate to have my family and friends here with me this week. There are a lot of people that support me in what I am doing. They are the people who make me who I am and the people who challenge me daily to improve; not just be comfortable in my position, but to work on getting better: both physically and mentally.

This week is a week off for me. I am going to be staying here in Scottsdale for the week working on my game and spending time with my family. It should be a good week of rejuvenation and game improvement.

I’m looking forward to play at Disney next week in my last event of the year. I have always been taught and been privy to finishing strong. I am looking for a good finish next week to have that strong finish and propel me into a great beginning of the 2009 season.

I felt like going to Michael Scott’s Crime Aid after this week. I could have bid on that hug from Phyllis.

Justin Timberlake Shriner's Hospital for Children's Open

I was in Las Vegas this week. My friends were there; my family was there; Justin Timberlake was there. Playing the Justin Timberlake Shriner’s Hospital for Children’s Open was great for 71 holes.  Hardly any wind made for low scores. Birdies were flying and everyone just tried to keep up. My game felt really good all the way around: from my driver all the way through the green.

I hope you enjoyed the headband. I just wanted to have some fun with it; shake things up a bit. And I did have fun. It was great to be back in Vegas were I went to college and lived for a bit after I got on tour. The tournament was a good one for me as I finished at -17 and a tie for 24th. I didn’t really do what I wanted as far as moving up the money list, but my game is getting back to where I want it, so that is always positive.

The fun continued on Friday night as I headed to the Justin Timberlake concert with a friend. I knew that Timberlake was talented, but I didn’t realize how amazing he is as a performer. It was a great show and a million dollars was raised for the Shriner’s Hospital for Children: a real good cause. Every performer that night was fun to watch.

I just want to thank everybody that came out a supported me this week. I was really comfortable out there and I was swinging the clubs well. Hopefully, that will continue as I go out and play in Scottsdale this week at the Frys.com Open.

For those of you that watched The Office on Thursday, remember that newborns are slippery and if one of you is having a baby soon, keep a sharpie handy, so you know which one is yours.

    Until next week…

Heading off for the rest of the PGA's Fall Season

It’s been a great week here at home.  I always like coming home and being around my family and friends. It’s a good change of pace than the constant of being on the road and in a hotel room, but this week is coming to an end and I am going back on the road.

This next week I’ll be playing in Las Vegas and you will see a little wardrobe change. It is something that I’ve worn before, but not often. Look for it these next couple of weeks.

I’m looking forward to Vegas. I’ve spent a lot of time there. Obviously, while in college at UNLV and then I had a house their for a couple years once I turned pro. Vegas has always been good to me and it would be great to have a solid finish this week while friends and family are out watching me.

After Vegas, I go down to Phoenix for a week for the Frys.com Open at Grayhawk. I make my second home down there, so it will be good to be in my own bed. After that, a week off and then I am off to Orlando for the Tour event. That’s always a fun week because my young nephews come and we get to go to Disneyworld. It’s so much fun watching them and taking them on rides.

It should be a really good few weeks of golf for me. I like all the courses I’m playing and my game feels the best it has all year. I’m excited to get out there and play.

    Until next week…

Turning Stone: From Fish to Golf

My friend and current caddie, Troy and I got to get out fishing on a nearby lake 3 times last week and pulled some good sized fish out. We also got a chance to do a bit of salmon fishing. Troy caught a couple 25 pound salmon and I caught a nice 7 pound brown trout.

All in all, it was a good haul. I’ve really got into fishing these past couple months. Business people and other professionals: they play golf to relax. Golfers: we fish. I’m not quite yet ‘The Angler’, but I’m getting there.

It’s probably good to mention that I also played some golf this week. The East Coast fall weather was really nice – wind and rain: you got to love it. Halfway through my second round, my swing started feeling great and I started hitting the ball the way I know I’m capable of. I’ve been working hard on fitness and my game these past few months, and it’s rewarding to see it, finally, all starting to come together.

We were in New York for the Turning Stone Resort Championship. A pair of 69’s on the weekend felt a lot better than the pair I shot Thursday and Friday, and by the end I was able to climb up to tie for 25th.

I’m home for a week working out and working on my game and then I’m off to Vegas for the event down there. I’m excited to see all my friends from UNLV out there following me.

Stay tuned right here for more updates and to watch my progress at Jobvana.com/RyanMoore and you can see all my stats at PGATour.com.

    Heading to Turning Stone

Thank you to everyone who came out and supported the many great charities being benefited by the Oakley ProAm, Junior Clinic and BMW Northwest Charity Skins Game that I hosted a couple weeks ago in Tacoma. Aaron Baddeley, Ben Crane, Bubba Watson and I had a great time and were extremely impressed with everyone’s support and participation. We were able to raise a lot of money for Operation Holiday Hope, Tacoma Emergency Food Network, Cedar Springs Outreach Organization, and the Chambers Creek Foundation.

I have had a wonderful break the last month spending time with family and friends, putting on the charity golf tournament and being back on some of my favorite courses working on my golf game. You truly cannot beat the summers in the Pacific Northwest. But I’m excited to be back on tour this week as I’ll be teeing off on Thursday at the
Turning Stone Resort Championship in New York. I’m scheduled to tee off at 11:55am EST. Track my progress on the Turning Stone Leaderboard – and I’ll try to get another blog up after the event.
